Creating a character is a path to fame – for the character and not necessarily for the creator. If you saw the Waldo episode on Black Mirror, the puppeteer behind Waldo lives vicariously though his animated puppet. Waldo is just an animated video avatar in the form of a blue bear with a huge erection who mocks politicians. The man controlling Waldo is completely irrelevant, but the man controlling him makes a mess of the power Waldo has gained. He can’t hack it and quits, and loses not only the control of Waldo, he also loses control of his own life.
